A $100 box that can help you see (and control) what you’re sharing on the Internet

Industry News
We're connecting voice activated tablets, nanny-cams, security cameras, home assistants and even home security systems to our home Internet connection and inviting anyone with access to those devices into our homes with them. In an ideal world, the number of folks coming in would be very small and our trusted devices would be, well, trustworthy. Unfortunately, that's not always the case. Making matters worse, we're creating very soft targets for even low skilled attackers. At home, our defenses are down, the gear is typically ad-hoc and there's no logging or oversight on what's going on on the network. New devices can be added at will (yours or, when the neighbors kid guesses your wifi password, theirs) and devices on your network have the freedom to do pretty much anything that…

July 2018 News and Updates

Monthly Newsletters
Executive Summary - The Cyber Tech Cafe Managed Services program was, by all metrics, an overwhelming success.  It's always good to see organizations taking a more proactive role in securing their infrastructure and even better to be able to play a part in it.  There were significant updates from Microsoft and Adobe this month but Adobe certainly took the cake with over 100 patches issued. News Managed Firewall Services - We announced in April that we were considering offering a managed firewall option.  The initial offer was very well received and we'd like to expand it to 5 additional clients.  The price for the base package is $169 per month and includes a firewall and daily reporting on it's performance and activity.  All of the routine management (license renewals, firmware updates,…

Comcast Telephone Service Outage at Cyber Tech Cafe

CTC NEWS
At approximately 12:30pm ET, we were alerted of problems with inbound telephone calls.  We confirmed and found that outbound calls are also down. At approximately 12:40pm ET, we reached out to Comcast Business and were alerted of a known issue and given an expected resolution time of 3:55pm ET. Outbound calls are currently unavailable and inbound calls are being redirected to a message that the "Verizon Wireless customer you called is not available at this time".  Some of the inbound numbers seem to be working intermittently (specifically, 678.792.7785) but nothing consistently. In the interim, please use our website contact form (https://www.ctc.co/contact-us/) to submit new support requests or our web portal (https://www.ctc.co/clients/) to check the status of existing support requests. We apologize for the inconvenience. UPDATE - 3:58pm ET - At…

April 2018 News and Updates

Monthly Newsletters
Executive Summary - There were significant updates from Microsoft and Adobe this month as long as a minor update to Java.  The most interesting updates that I've seen thus far address a vulnerability in the Windows Font Library (CVE-2018-1010, -1012, -1013, -1015, -1016).  These could be exploited remotely by an attacker via social engineering attack (phishing, etc.) to get access as the logged-on user and then chained together with a privilege escalation vulnerability (like CVE 2018-1034) to gain administrative or system level access. News Managed Firewall Services - We are considering offering a managed firewall solution and are looking for 3 to 5 clients that would be interested in helping us to pilot the program.  Test sites would need to have a minimum of 5 workstations and a maximum of 10…

Uncategorized
Early in the day on 5 March 2018, we received notifications of potential problems on some of the AppRiver services that we use and recommend.  After reviewing the data that we had, we confirmed that there were problems in the AppRiver Atlanta Datacenter. We reached out to AppRiver who confirmed the outage and referred us to their Status Page for ongoing updates.
